The Ghana Education Service has announced that fresh students entering senior high and technical schools will begin the 2026/2027 academic year on September 18, 2026.

The development marks the second consecutive year of the adjusted post-COVID academic calendar, with second-cycle institutions officially returning to the September academic schedule.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations Unit of the GES, Daniel Fenyi, the Service assured all Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates that adequate preparations had been made to receive them.

According to the statement, all qualified BECE candidates would be placed into senior high schools or technical and vocational institutions across the country.

“Every effort has been made to ensure that each student has access to senior high/technical education,” the statement said.

The GES also dismissed media reports claiming that about 72,000 students risked missing placement, describing the reports as speculative and inaccurate.

“We therefore urge the public to disregard it. There are adequate infrastructure and facilities to accommodate all qualified students,” the statement added.

The Service further assured stakeholders that efforts to phase out the double-track system would not affect access to secondary education, stressing that the policy changes are intended to improve teaching and learning outcomes while maintaining access for all students.

Meanwhile, the GES has released the approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year for all basic schools, including kindergarten, primary, and junior high schools.

According to the calendar, the first term for basic schools will begin on September 8, 2026, and end on December 17, 2026, while the second term will run from January 5, 2027, to March 25, 2027.

The third term is expected to begin on April 20, 2027, and end on July 22, 2027.

The GES also announced that the 2027 BECE examination will take place from May 5 to May 12, 2027.

The Service noted that the academic calendar adjustments stem from disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced schools to temporarily adopt a January-to-December calendar between 2021 and 2022 before gradually returning to the traditional academic schedule.

GES reaffirmed its commitment to equitable, inclusive, and quality education for every Ghanaian child.
