Former Majority Leader and veteran politician, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has cleared the air regarding the role of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s upcoming internal polls. He stated categorically that the former Vice President and NPP flagbearer has no intention of influencing the outcome of the party’s internal elections. This assurance from the Suame MP is aimed at silencing rumors of a “favored list” of candidates circulating within the party.
According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is strictly focused on unifying the party for the 2028 general elections. He explained that the leader understands the dangers of imposition, which often leads to apathy and internal sabotage. By staying neutral, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is allowing the grassroots to choose leaders they truly trust to lead the party at various levels.
The statement comes at a critical time as the NPP prepares for several key executive elections across the country. Many supporters were worried that the influence of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia might be used to sideline certain factions. However, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu insisted that the flagbearer is a democrat who believes in a level playing field for every dedicated member of the NPP.
Analysts believe this “hands-off” approach by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a strategic move to build a truly inclusive campaign machinery. When leaders are elected based on merit rather than patronage, the party becomes stronger and more resilient against the opposition. This “viral” confirmation of neutrality is expected to reduce the rising tension among various camps vying for internal positions.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has consistently preached about the “Breaking the Eight” agenda, and a fair internal election is seen as the first step. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu urged all aspirants to stop using the name of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to gain an unfair advantage or intimidate their rivals. The party remains committed to transparency to ensure that the ultimate goal of winning 2028 is not compromised.
