A wave of shock has hit the Upper East Region following the tragic death of a police officer during a violent armed robbery on the Zebilla-Widnaba road. The officer, who was reportedly part of a team responding to reports of criminal activity in the Bawku West District, was killed during a fierce exchange of fire with a gang of armed men.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred when the robbery suspects intercepted travelers on the busy stretch, which has recently seen a spike in security concerns. The police team arrived at the scene to intervene, but the gunmen opened fire, fatally wounding the officer. Despite efforts to provide immediate medical assistance, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The Ghana Police Service has since intensified its presence in the Zebilla area, launching a massive manhunt to track down the perpetrators.
